Kirsten Kjær was a portrait painter who lived between1893-1985. She was an independent and widely travelled woman with a charismatic vibrancy. In addition, she possessed the ability to conduct herself in all walks of life.
Her journeys are also reflected in her portraits. Many of them are painted in countries such as Liberia, the United States, Iceland and post-war Poland.
Kirsten Kjær’s independent nature is also apparent in her way of defying the codes of conduct of her time, by getting a divorce and by vocally criticizing the prevalent view on women.
A movie about Kirsten Kjær and her life is shown in the museum’s projection room.
