A workshop with Aljoscha Blau at Kirsten Kjærs Museum Sept 4 – 6, 2026. Arrival and accommodation Thursday evening, September 3rd at 6:00 PM

Portrait drawing is about more than portraiture. It is also a way of depicting what cannot be seen, namely a personality. Therefore do we really dare to draw friends or even strangers from up close? And how do we convey our relationship to the subject?

In the marvelous environment of Kirtsen Kjaers ́ Museum, surrounded by masterpieces of expressive portraits, this workshop will introduce you to contamporary techniques for capturing people around you.

Armed with colored pencils, we will explore different drawing strategies, ranging from simple monochrome drawings to colorful and painterly portraits. The goal of this workshop is to build more confidence in portrait drawing in different situations, while also learning the technique of loose colored-pencil sketching. The focus will be on expression, which is often neglected in realistic drawing.

• learn essential techniques for drawing with colored pencils
• discuss what matters most when creating likeness
• practice placing important accents and visually expressing our relationship to the model
• touch on the fundamentals of facial structure and individual facial features
• Discovering how Kirsten Kjær and other artists convey emotional intensity in portraiture

Suitable both for beginners with basic drawing skills and for more advanced artists.

Aljoscha Blau, German-Russian artist and illustrator. Since late 1990s he has been creating over 60 illustrated children ́s and adult ́s books and a number of graphic series. An important part of his work is keeping awareness of own life experience through continuous drawing in sketchbooks. Aljoscha Blau is also involved in teaching at art academies in Germany, Denmark, Italy, France and Switzerland sharing his methods of „sketchbooking“ with students. His artistic work has been honored with numerous international awards such as German Children Book Award, Austrian Children Book Award, German Design Award Gold, Bologna Ragazzi Award, Prix Figure Future etc. Lives in Berlin.
